Hughes began his hockey career playing for the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League in Canada before moving on to play for the United States National Team Development Program (NTDP). During his time with the NTDP, Hughes played for the under-17 and under-18 teams and proved himself as one of the top young prospects in the game.

In 2019, Hughes was selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils, making him the youngest player ever drafted first overall in the league. He made his NHL debut with the Devils in the 2019-2020 season and quickly started making an impact on the ice.
